Indie Music On TV

  • Aug 11, 2008

One thing I've noticed lately is a trend towards having indie music in TV ads and TV shows. It makes sense to me... From an indie artist's perspective, they have to support their art SOMEHOW, and at least doing ads and TV shows gets their music to a wider audience. From a TV/ad executive's perspective, it's probably a lot less expensive to get tracks from indie artists than from established ones. Personally I find it kind of cool to catch an iPod ad featuring a Feist song or something.

But I really LOVE it when a TV show makes a concerted effort to put together an awesome soundtrack comprised mainly of indie bands. It doesn't hurt if the show itself is as awesome as its soundtrack. This is why I'm stoked to tell you all about the newest show coming to BBC America. It's called SKINS and it's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It's one of Britain's top TV shows, and follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. It's not unlike My So Called Life or One Tree Hill, but the show addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own way. It's awesome because the plots aren't some fantasy created by adult writers based on what they think a teen's life MIGHT be like... The show's writing staff is mostly teens and young adults, so there's a sense of reality that makes you feel like these characters could be your friends, or even yourself.

Best of all, the show features some awesome indie music. The first season soundtrack has Gossip, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Earlies, The Hives, and the most amazing cover of Wild World (done by one of the show's characters) ever. The theme song is by Fat Segal and there are even more awesome bands to be heard within the episodes themselves (Band of Horses, for example). Anyway, if you want to catch an amazing show and hear some amazing music at the same time, I definitely recommend you check out SKINS on Sunday, August 17th at 9pm/8c. I know you'll love it.

If you want to learn more about the characters, you can read their profiles on the official site (here).

We also have a lot of awesome trailers, character clips and cast interviews on our official YouTube Channel (here).

Here's my favorite trailer for a little peak...

Anyway, I know this is a bit OT, but I'm really excited about this awesome show and the awesome artists the show is supporting. I think a lot of you will be really into it.

The best thing about Weeds...

  • Aug 8, 2008
  • Post a comment

I have to say I love this show. I love that they address real issues and put everything in perspective. I mean, pot use is really a fact of life in America, whether it's illegal or not, and I think because Mary-Louise Parker's character defies the stereotype of a pot smoker it just puts a great spin on things. And I love Silas' character! But really for me the best thing about it is its edginess... They can really only get away with it because it's on Shotime (awesome station) but that's what I love most about it. There's nothing else like it on television. Isn't that what we all love about it?

I think the answer is yes, and that's why is why I'm stoked to tell you all about the newest show coming to BBC America. It's called SKINS and it's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It's one of Britain's top TV shows, and follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. It's been called "Dawson's Creek on speed"... Basically, the show addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own edgy way. It's awesome because the plots aren't some fantasy created by adult writers based on what they think a teen's life MIGHT be like... The show's writing staff is mostly teens and young adults, so there's a sense of reality that makes you feel like these characters could be your friends, or even yourself.

But the reason I really think you'll like the show is its edginess. Maybe because it's British, it really pushes the envelope as far as its portrayal of teen life. In a lot of ways the characters remind me of Silas, or elements of Silas (if that makes sense). They're shown as doing things that may be shocking but ring very true, which I think is the case with Weeds as well.

If you want to learn more about the characters, you can read their profiles on the official site (here).

We also have a lot of awesome trailers, character clips and cast interviews on our official YouTube Channel (here).

Love Triangles

  • Post a comment

Am I the only one whose favorite storyline was in the very beginning, when Lucas was interested in Nathan's girlfriend (Peyton)? I know it didn't last very long and played itself out pretty quickly but for some reason love triangles in general always really interest me. I was also really into the triangle between Lucas, Brooke and Peyton. But I think my FAVORITE love triangle is actually on a different show called SKINS. In the show Tony is kind of the heartthrob and his best friend Sid is the nerd... Sid is in love with Tony's girlfriend Michelle. It makes for some awesome tension and storylines, love it! That's Tony, Michelle and Sid below.

Anyway, Skins is a great show, and it's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It  follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. But there's also plenty of drama, which is awesome of course! The Tony/Michelle/Sid love triangle is my personal favorite, but there's more than enough storylines to go around and they're all great.

I'm sorry if this is a bit OT, but I'm really excited about this awesome show and I think that a lot of you will be really into it. It's not every day that a show with the same energy as One Tree Hill comes along, but Skins definitely has that so you DON'T want to miss it!

"...so I could be lovely for you"

  • Aug 8, 2008
  • Post a comment

"I didn't eat for three days so I could be lovely for you." Cassie Ainsworth, SKINS

That's one of my favorite quotes... I think everyone has probably felt like that a time or two, especially while growing up. Between peer pressure and pressure from family pressure it's hard NOT to feel like that, like you have to do something completely ridiculous to be acceptable. Not eat, not speak your mind, change who you are... The quote is from a British TV series called SKINS, which is premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It  follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. It's not unlike My So Called Life or One Tree Hill, but the show addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own way. The performance of the cast is also amazing, because you never get the feeling that they're acting. It's very comforting in a way, because I think to act those emotions so well you have to have felt them, so that means there are even more people in the world who understand them. If that makes sense! I definitely recommend you check out SKINS on Sunday, August 17th at 9pm/8c. I know you'll love it.

If you want to talk about emotional...

  • Aug 8, 2008
  • Post a comment

I think one of the most emotional times in anyone's life is the last few years of high school... There's so much pressure and so much effort being put into figuring out who you are. It's also when we're all making all of our mistakes, which has a huge emotional impact. I think for me the worst part was dealing with all of those things and really feeling like no one understood what I was going through at all.

I really wish the show SKINS had been on then. I think it would have helped me feel less alone, because it shows characters going through exactly what I was going through at the time (and still, to an extent). It's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It's one of Britain's top TV shows, and follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. It's not unlike My So Called Life or One Tree Hill, but the show addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own way. Nicholas Holt!

  • Aug 8, 2008
  • Post a comment

Britain has always had such a great tradition of acting, and I think you'll have to agree that Nicholas Holt is one of Britain's most promising new talents. He was really moving in "About A Boy" with Hugh Grant... His performance was reviewed better than Hugh's in many cases! Honestly I can't wait to see what this talented young man will do with the rest of his career.

He's also stayed busy since "About A Boy", taking on the lead role in one of Britain's top TV shows. It's called SKINS and it's premiering here in the US on August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It follows a group of high school friends (with Nicholas Holt as the ringleader) dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. It's not unlike My So Called Life or One Tree Hill in the US, but the show addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own way. It's awesome because the plots aren't some fantasy created by adult writers based on what they think a teen's life MIGHT be like... Best of all, the entire cast is unbelievably talented. Nicholas Holt is definitely a standout as the popular heartthrob Tony Stonem, but each character is portrayed perfectly. It's all the more impressive because all of these kids are so young. I definitely recommend you check out SKINS on Sunday, August 17th at 9pm/8c. I know you'll love it.

Thank GOD for BBC America

I don't know about you guys, but I've always felt a little disappointed by American TV. Some of it is good but I've just never been too excited about it. I've always much preferred foreign shows, such as the BBC's programming. The characters are just so much more realistic, or maybe it's just that the writing is better. Not sure, but let's just say that like many of you my favorite TV station is BBC America! LOL.

Anyway, those of us who don't have constant access to the BBC could all use a bit more Britain in our lives! This is why I'm stoked to tell you all about the newest show coming to BBC America. It's called SKINS and it's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. It's one of Britain's top TV shows, and follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. Best of all, the show is set in Bristol and is VERY British in tone... Not just because it's a British show, but because they work really hard to be authentic to the area where it's set, so all the slang etc. is just perfect. The BBC really outdid itself with this one. I definitely recommend you check out SKINS on Sunday, August 17th at 9pm/8c. I know you'll love it.

While we're waiting for Degrassi...

  • Aug 7, 2008

I don't know about you guys, but since the last season of Degrassi ended I've been missing it like crazy. Especially Marco, he'll always be my favorite! The things I've heard about Season 8 sound promising but it's going to be awhile before we get it here in the US :( I need something to fill the void!

This is why I'm stoked to tell you all about another show that really "goes there". It's called SKINS and it's premiering here August 17 at 9pm/8c on BBC America. Like Degrassi, it follows a group of high school friends dealing with their crazy lives as best they can. There are a lot of paralells, including the character Maxxie who reminds me so much of Marco (so of course he's my favorite). But the show also addresses all of the issues that are important to teens in its own way. It's awesome because the plots aren't some fantasy created by adult writers based on what they think a teen's life MIGHT be like... The show's writing staff is mostly teens and young adults, so there's a sense of reality that makes you feel like these characters could be your friends, or even yourself.

As we all wait patiently for the new season of Degrassi, I definitely recommend you check out SKINS on Sunday, August 17th at 9pm/8c. I know you'll love it, and that will make the wait all the more bearable ;)
